Thermal Oil Heaters- How They Work

Heaters and boilers are available in many different shapes and sizes. Some heaters use natural gas, while others require electricity. However, there are certain heaters which operate with the help of thermal oil. These are mainly used in industrial applications, and are high-temperature heaters specifically designed for certain processes. Both water and steam are good thermal conductors; however, at temperatures over 100 degrees Celsius, it’s important to maintain a higher operating pressure.

This isn’t a problem with thermal oil heaters. An oil-based thermal fluid is generally used as the heat carrier instead of steam or water. The oil-based thermal fluid is capable of operating at atmospheric pressure as high as 300 degrees Celsius. However, if the temperature goes above 300 degrees, the thermal fluid will also need to be pressurised. A helical coil is installed in the boiler which generates energy from combustion, and passes it through convection and radiation to the thermal oil fluid. The fluid is then pumped into the boiler without putting a lot of pressure on the system.

Why Are Thermal Oil Boilers Considered Better Than Water Boilers?

Thermal oil boilers are considered to be superior to water-based boiling systems simply because they require little maintenance and are also considerably cheaper to operate. Significantly high pressure is required while operating water-based boiling systems. This makes them considerably more hazardous, especially in factories and other contained environments. In cases when the boiler bursts, operators and workers might be seriously injured.

Another major advantage of thermal oil boilers over conventional water boilers is that they do not corrode as easily. You don’t need to worry about the deposition of lime scale or salt, which is a common problem in steam and heater water boilers. Needless to say, regular cleaning of the pipes in water boilers leads to a sharp increase in the operating costs. When it comes to draining the steam taps, thermal oil boilers don’t require any makeup water or steam either.

Applications

Thermal oil boilers can be used in virtually any application where a water or steam boiler is used. They are most commonly used for heating natural gas or for heating jacketed vessels. They are also used in indirect steam generators, in-line gas heating, crude oil heating, and for creating heated moulds or dies.
